Meet LaGerPo: The 60kg Miracle Calf
A newborn baby weighing 60kg (132lb) might sound hefty to us, but for a baby elephant, it’s dangerously underweight. Most elephant calves weigh between 90-120kg (200-264lb) at birth.
LaGerPo—whose name means “bright moon in the sky”—was brought to FAE Elephant Hospital at just two days old. His mother, MoGeeLoh, a first-time mom, struggled to produce enough milk, leaving the little calf’s survival uncertain.
That’s when the skilled and compassionate team at FAE, led by Dr. Kay, stepped in. Through a carefully designed feeding plan using rice water and goat’s milk, combined with round-the-clock care, they gave LaGerPo the strength he needed to survive. Today, with small amounts of his mother’s milk and regular goat’s milk feedings, this “bright moon in the sky” is thriving.
How to Feed a Baby Elephant
Feeding an elephant calf isn’t as simple as popping a bottle into its mouth.
FAE’s veterinary team has perfected a delicate process:
- Starting with Rice Water: In the early stages, rice water is used to ease the calf’s digestive system into accepting external nutrition.
- Introducing Goat’s Milk: Goat’s milk, which is easily digested, is mixed with rice water in increasing quantities over time.
- Transitioning to Full Goat’s Milk: Gradually, the rice water is phased out, leaving the calf fully reliant on goat’s milk for nourishment.
- Hourly Feedings: The process requires unwavering dedication—Dr. Kay and her team feed LaGerPo every hour!
