Hexawash · eco laundry

Laundry without detergent. For more than 300 washes.

Hexawash is an organic cotton pouch filled with magnesium pellets. Drop it in the drum, wash as normal, hang it to dry. No jug, no suds, no residue — and nothing to buy again for at least a year in most households.

  • 300+washes from one pouch
  • 1 yearfor most households
  • $150a year not spent on detergent

How does it work?

  1. Magnesium meets water

In the drum, the pellets react with water and release hydrogen gas and magnesium hydroxide.

  2. The water turns alkaline

That reaction makes the wash water an alkaline solution of around pH 10.5 — the ideal pH for washing clothes.

  3. Dirt and oil let go

The hydroxide ions reduce the water's surface tension, so dirt and oil break down and rinse away without any soap at all.

We tested it on the smelliest of teenagers' T-shirts and the grubbiest of toddlers' clothing, and they came out fresh and clean. For stained clothing we recommend a natural stain remover as well.

How to use

  1. Pop it in the drum

Put the pouch straight in with your clothes. No measuring, no pouring — anyone in the house can do it.

  2. Wash as normal

Hot or cold, hard water or soft: it is just as effective in a cold wash as a hot one.

  3. Let the pouch dry

Hang it in a dry, sunny spot between washes. The dryer is fine in rainy season; a fan is kinder to the cotton.

  4. Repeat, 300+ times

It starts at about 150 g. When the pouch weighs under 80 g the magnesium is spent — and it goes in the garden.

    Still Going At 250 Loads

Started using Hexawash in April 2025 and I am still on the same pouch in April 2026. Rough count of about 250 washes. The pouch is a little lighter in the hand than when new but still completely functional. True long haul product.

    Perfect For Wool

Cashmere jumpers and wool skirts terrify me because detergent can ruin them. Hexawash is gentle enough that I now wash my nicest knitwear at home instead of dropping them at the cleaner. Saves me a fortune.

    Plastic Free Packaging

Came wrapped in a paper envelope with a cotton string tie and that was the entire packaging. No shrink wrap, no plastic window, no filler. Ordered from the other side of the world and it arrived with zero waste.

Questions people ask

What can I use instead of laundry detergent?

The best plastic-free replacement is magnesium. Hexawash is an organic cotton pouch filled with magnesium pellets that cleans a normal load as well as regular detergent — no chemicals, no suds, no plastic jug — and lasts more than 300 washes.

We don't recommend the popular substitutes you may have seen online. Shampoo, body wash and dish soap are made to foam, and their suds can overflow your machine, leave residue in your clothes and even damage the sensors of high-efficiency washers. Baking soda can help with odors but doesn't lift dirt and oil on its own. A magnesium pouch does the whole job, wash after wash — read more about non-toxic laundry alternatives.

Can you really wash clothes without detergent?

Yes! When magnesium meets water it forms an alkaline solution of pH 10.5 — the ideal pH for washing clothes. The reaction produces negative hydroxide ions that reduce the water's surface tension, so dirt and oil break down and rinse away without any soap at all. Magnesium has been proven to be 10 times better at removing stubborn stains than regular laundry detergent.

That's exactly how Hexawash works: pop the pouch in the drum, press start, and skip the detergent aisle for the next 300+ loads.

Is Hexawash a 100% natural laundry detergent alternative?

Yes! Hexawash is an innovative approach to chemical-free laundry detergent. Each Hexawash contains an organic cotton pouch filled with magnesium pellets — and absolutely zero synthetic chemicals.

We know conventional laundry detergents contain substances that can clog waterways, irritate your skin or expose you to phosphates and potential carcinogens. Hexawash, by contrast, is a 100% natural, vegan, non-toxic and eco-friendly laundry detergent alternative that still cleans clothes as well as — if not better — than your normal detergent! Made from fully biodegradable materials, the Hexawash is also plastic-free and ideal for those seeking a zero-waste laundry detergent.

Does your family have sensitive skin? Hexawash is hypoallergenic, meaning it contains zero of the nasties that cause itchy skin and allergic reactions. If you’re looking for a laundry product that’s gentle on your skin and chemical-free, Hexawash is the ultimate solution.

How does Hexawash work?

A nifty piece of science is what makes the SuperBee Hexawash work so well. Its cotton pouch is filled with hundreds of small magnesium pellets. When mixed with water, these balls react to form hydrogen gas (H₂) and magnesium hydroxide (Mg(OH)₂) and to generate an alkaline solution of pH 10.5 in your washing machine — the ideal pH for washing clothes.

Negative hydroxide ions are also produced during this process and act to reduce the surface tension of the water, making it easier for dirt and oil to break down and be washed away. In fact, magnesium has been proven to be 10 times better at removing stubborn stains than regular laundry detergent!

Voilà: perfectly clean clothes and an organic laundry detergent alternative that’s kind to your skin, our waterways and the planet itself.

How do I use Hexawash?

Using this miraculous little pouch couldn’t be easier; it functions exactly like your usual detergent. Just pop your Hexwash into the washing machine drum and press start!

The Hexawash can also be used with both soft and hard water at any temperature. In fact, this 100% natural laundry detergent alternative is just as effective in a cold wash as in a hot one (which is a great way to lower your CO₂ emissions and environmental impact even further!).

It’s also safe to use in all washing machines, including top-loaders and front-loaders, as well as high-efficiency (HE) washing machines (no, it won’t damage the sensors!).

While the Hexawash is an effortless way to turn your laundry chemical and plastic-free, there are a couple of tips for getting sparklingly clean and fresh laundry every time:

  • Soaking the Hexawash first can enhance the cleaning process, so use the soak function — if your machine has it — with just the Hexwash before washing your clothes. Alternatively, soaking the Hexawash in a bucket of water before putting it into your machine will do the same job.
  • For clothing that’s heavily stained or carries a strong odor, leave it to soak alongside the Hexawash before washing, too.
  • You can skip the rinse cycle on your washing machine when using the Hexawash, as no soap suds are created and there’s no residue to wash away. If your washing machine doesn’t allow you to skip the rinse cycle, don’t worry; Hexawash will still work exactly the same, you’ll just use a little more water.
  • If you’re handwashing, put the items in a bucket of water with the Hexawash for around an hour before beginning the handwashing process.
  • Hexawash is naturally odor-free and we don’t recommend using it with fabric softener — we prefer to keep our waterways chemical-free! However, if you want to use fabric softener alongside, note that the fragrance may be reduced due to the strong odor-removing powers of the magnesium pellets.
  • As a final step, if you use a clothes dryer, we recommend adding a little of your favorite essential oils to the outside of our wool dryer balls and placing them in with your load of washing. Not only will the balls reduce the drying time, but the essential oils will give your clothes a beautifully subtle fragrance.
  • Hang it up to dry with your clothes.
How long does Hexawash last?

Hexawash gives you great value for money. Unlike typical laundry detergents, it will last more than 300 washes — that’s at least a year for most households!

You’ll know that your Hexawash has reached the end of its life by its change in weight. Before use, a Hexawash contains 120g of magnesium and weighs around 150g. As it cleans countless loads of washing, the magnesium gradually dissolves and when the pouch weighs less than 80g, it contains too little magnesium to continue to clean effectively for a normal-sized load. You could reduce your load size by 50% and continue to use it, or you could retire it to your garden.

What should I do with my Hexawash when it reaches the end of its life?

When your Hexawash weighs less than 80g, simply bury it in your garden. The organic cotton will biodegrade, while the magnesium will fertilize the soil, helping your garden to flourish.

Can I put my Hexawash in the dryer?

Most asked! Yes, you can put your Hexawash pouch in the dryer if it’s rainy season and you cannot hang it in a dry, sunny place. This will not change your Hexawash’s ability to clean, nor affect your dryer. We do recommend to dry the pouch in front of a fan instead of in the dryer, to minimize wear on the canvas cotton pouch for the duration of 300-365 loads.
