If we want to save the environment, we must learn how to communicate well and bring more people into the movement. That’s the core message shared by John Ho, cofounder of Alt_Coliving and community builder, in Episode 2 of SuperBee’s weekly video series What’s Buzzing.

John is the visionary behind Thailand’s #1 community-based co-living and co-working space in Chiang Mai—a hub where entrepreneurs, digital nomads, and changemakers live, work, and collaborate with purpose. In our conversation, he explained why effective networking and human connection are critical to building momentum for sustainability and community-driven change.

3 Simple Tips to Network Better for Sustainability

John shared three powerful strategies that anyone can apply to create stronger connections and inspire more people to take part in sustainable initiatives:

1. Expectation Management

Before starting a conversation, ask yourself: What are my intentions and goals?
Are you hoping to make a new friend, spark collaboration, or explore business opportunities? Setting clear intentions helps prevent miscommunication and ensures everyone feels aligned.

2. Offer Value

Instead of approaching networking with a “What can I get?” mindset, focus on giving. Be the person who consistently provides value—whether through support, knowledge, or resources—without expecting anything in return. This not only builds trust but also strengthens your reputation and long-term connections.

3. Be Open to Other Perspectives

Every conversation is an exchange of worldviews, shaped by experiences, cultures, and ideas. Listening with openness—even when you disagree—fosters respect and prevents conflict. Leaning into another perspective can unlock new insights and create deeper, more authentic connections.

The Role of Personality in Networking

John also touched on the fascinating differences between introverts and extroverts in social settings. While extroverts may thrive in group interactions, introverts often shine in smaller, deeper conversations. Understanding these dynamics helps us build inclusive communities where everyone feels empowered to contribute.

Why This Matters for Sustainability

Sustainability isn’t just about reducing plastic waste or creating eco-friendly products. It’s also about building strong, supportive communities that inspire action. As John reminds us, the way we communicate, collaborate, and connect with others directly impacts our ability to create meaningful environmental change.
