About Hexawash, our organic laundry detergent
Our innovative and 100% non-toxic laundry detergent Hexawash is made from a GOTS-certified organic cotton canvas pouch filled with magnesium solution. The magnesium makes it easy for dirt and oil to lift off clothes and be washed away. Simply place the Hexawash in your washing machine and set your clothes to clean as usual.
What’s more, we use off-cuts from our organic cotton wax wraps to make our Hexawash pouches, and don’t use any plastic in the packaging. As a result, this is a 100% plastic-free laundry detergent that’s perfect for inclusion in our travel laundry kit.
Each Hexawash can be used approximately 300 times and even after that you can continue using it alongside a new Hexawash, or reuse it as fertilizer in your garden. All in all, it’ll keep your clothes and the planet clean.

Top tips for using the Hexawash
As an all-natural laundry detergent, the Hexawash does work a little differently than your traditional washing detergent. Allowing the Hexawash to soak first can improve the cleaning process, so if your machine has a soak function, use it to soak just the Hexwash before washing your clothes; alternatively, soaking the Hexawash in a bucket of water before putting it into your machine will do the same job. For clothing with a strong odor or heavier stains, we recommend soaking clothes in water alongside the Hexawash before washing, too.
You can also skip the rinse cycle on your machine as there’s no detergent residue to rinse away, something that’ll save you a lot of water in the long term.
Use alongside our wool dryer balls, which soften clothes and can reduce drying time by 30%!
Is Hexawash a 100% natural laundry detergent alternative?
Yes!
Hexawash is an innovative approach to chemical-free laundry detergent. Each Hexawash contains an organic cotton pouch filled with magnesium pellets — and absolutely zero synthetic chemicals.
We know conventional laundry detergents contain substances that can clog waterways, irritate your skin or expose you to phosphates and potential carcinogens. Hexawash, by contrast, is a 100% natural, vegan,
non-toxic and eco-friendly laundry detergent alternative that still cleans clothes as well as — if not better — than your normal detergent! Made from fully biodegradable materials, the Hexawash is also plastic-free and ideal for those seeking a zero-waste laundry detergent.
Does your family have sensitive skin? Hexawash is hypoallergenic, meaning it contains zero of the nasties that cause itchy skin and allergic reactions. If you’re looking for a laundry product that’s gentle on your skin
and chemical-free, Hexawash is the ultimate solution.
How does Hexawash work?
A nifty piece of science is what makes the SuperBee Hexawash work so well. Its cotton pouch is filled with hundreds of small magnesium pellets. When mixed with water, these balls react to form hydrogen gas (H₂) and magnesium hydroxide (Mg(OH)₂) and to generate an alkaline solution of pH 10.5 in your washing machine — the ideal pH for washing clothes.
Negative hydroxide ions are also produced during this process and act to reduce the surface tension of the water, making it easier for dirt and oil to break down and be washed away. In fact, magnesium has been proven to be 10 times better at removing stubborn stains than regular laundry detergent!
Voilà: perfectly clean clothes and an organic laundry detergent alternative that’s kind to your skin, our waterways and the planet itself.
How do I use Hexawash?
Using this miraculous little pouch couldn’t be easier; it functions exactly like your usual detergent. Just pop your Hexwash into the washing machine drum and press start! The Hexawash can also be used with both soft and hard water at any temperature. In fact, this 100% natural laundry detergent alternative is just as effective in a cold wash as in a hot one (which is a great way to lower your CO₂ emissions and environmental impact even further!).It’s also safe to use in all washing machines, including top-loaders and front-loaders, as well as high-efficiency (HE) washing machines (no, it won’t damage the sensors!).While the Hexawash is an effortless way to turn your laundry chemical and plastic-free, there are a couple of tips for getting sparklingly clean and fresh laundry every time:
- Soaking the Hexawash first can enhance the cleaning process, so use the soak function — if your machine has it — with just the Hexwash before washing your clothes. Alternatively, soaking the Hexawash in a bucket of water before putting it into your machine will do the same job.
- For clothing that’s heavily stained or carries a strong odor, leave it to soak alongside the Hexawash before washing, too.
- You can skip the rinse cycle on your washing machine when using the Hexawash, as no soap suds are created and there’s no residue to wash away. If your washing machine doesn’t allow you to skip the rinse cycle, don’t worry; Hexawash will still work exactly the same, you’ll just use a little more water.
- If you’re handwashing, put the items in a bucket of water with the Hexawash for around an hour before beginning the handwashing process.
- Hexawash is naturally odor-free and we don’t recommend using it with fabric softener — we prefer to keep our waterways chemical-free! However, if you want to use fabric softener alongside, note that the fragrance may be reduced due to the strong odor-removing powers of the magnesium pellets.
- As a final step, if you use a clothes dryer, we recommend adding a little of your favorite essential oils to the outside of our wool dryer balls and placing them in with your load of washing. Not only will the balls reduce the drying time, but the essential oils will give your clothes a beautifully subtle fragrance.
- Hang it up to dry with your clothes.
How long does Hexawash last?
Hexawash gives you great value for money. Unlike typical laundry detergents, it will last more than 300 washes — that’s at least a year for most households! You’ll know that your Hexawash has reached the end of its life by its change in weight. Before use, a Hexawash contains 120g of magnesium and weighs around 150g. As it cleans countless loads of washing, the magnesium gradually dissolves and when the pouch weighs less than 80g, it contains too little magnesium to continue to clean effectively for a normal-sized load. You could reduce your load size by 50% and continue to use it, or you could retire it to your garden.
What should I do with my Hexawash when it reaches the end of its life?
When your Hexawash weighs less than 80g, simply bury it in your garden. The organic cotton will biodegrade, while the magnesium will fertilize the soil, helping your garden to flourish.
