The Hidden Plastics in “Eco-Friendly” Laundry Sheets
Did you know that your so-called eco-friendly laundry sheets are probably hiding plastic? A recent buzz over laundry sheets has left us with confused consumers, confusing “research”, and lots of brands defending their best-sellers.
The Truth About Laundry Sheets
Laundry sheets have gained popularity as a compact, convenient alternative to traditional detergents. They’re marketed as an eco-friendly option, often praised for their plastic-free packaging and reduced carbon footprint. However, a deeper dive reveals a troubling truth.
One of the key ingredients in many laundry sheets is Polyvinyl Alcohol (PVA), a type of plastic. PVA is a water-soluble synthetic polymer used in a variety of products, including laundry sheets. Although it dissolves in water and biodegrades under specific conditions, it remains a conventional plastic derived from fossil fuels. This means that while PVA laundry sheets might reduce the use of plastic bottles, they still contribute to plastic pollution.
The Environmental Impact of PVA
Most studies on PVA’s biodegradability are conducted in controlled laboratory environments. However, real-world conditions vary greatly, and the effectiveness of biodegradation can be significantly lower. A recent article in the Washington Post, “How plastic hides in supposedly eco-friendly laundry products”, notes that:
“Several peer-reviewed studies have detected PVA in drinking water and human breast milk, and one estimated far more plastic may be flowing into the environment than breaking down in waste-treatment plants.”
Our waste treatment plants are designed to break down human waste, and the microbes that can break down PVA available in our water treatment plants might not be enough to handle the mass quantities of PVA pouring out of our laundries.
The controversial peer-reviewed study, funded by Blueland, suggests that we can’t recreate the effect of massive amounts of PVA in our environment in a lab setting and that the amount flowing out of our laundries exceeds the conditions to allow this biodegradable plastic to fully biodegrade, and could leave nearly 80 percent of PVA in wastewater – the equivalent of 800 million plastic bottles worth of plastic per year hanging out in our environment.
According to the Plastic Pollution Coalition:
“Health-related research on PVA/PVOH has almost exclusively been conducted on nonhuman animals such as rodents and dogs by PVA/PVOH producers. What little research has been done on humans shows concerning links to inflammation and irritation, especially when PVA/PVOH exposure occurs over a prolonged period.”
Whether you think the Blueland research and petition is biased or not, we can all agree that PVA “remains a conventional plastic derived from fossil fuels.”
